Inter BEE 2014 PFU - Cutting-edge video transmission demonstrations, including uncompressed 8K/60p live transmission with the NHK-MT booth, and 4K/60p transmission demonstration with JPEG 2000
2015.1.16 UP
At its own booth at Inter BEE 2014, PFU gave a demonstration of uncompressed 8K/60p live transmission using their company's own uncompressed video transmission equipment, the QoolTornado QG70; a demonstration of 4K/30p bidirectional uncompressed IP transmission; and a reference exhibit demonstration of 4K/60p 900 Mbps transmission using JPEG 2000 encoding.
■ Live broadcast of 8K/60p camera video from the International Conference Center
In the live transmission of uncompressed 8K/600p video, an 8K camera set up at the International Conference Center Convention Hall, the site of NHK Media Technology's (NHK-MT) 30th Anniversary Technology Exhibition, was used to broadcast 8K/60p uncompressed video live via IP. The 8K video signal from the camera was synchronized on four QG70 devices and sent via multicast transmission to the NHK-MT booth and PFU booth. It was transmitted to the PFU booth with a single-core optical fiber cable using WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplex Communication). It was displayed on 8K monitors via the four QG70 devices equipped in each booth.
At the PFU booth, it was displayed on a 2,540 mm (W) x 1,442 mm (H) four-sided multi-liquid crystal display through a converter made by ASTRODESIGN.
■ 4K uncompressed IP transmission with the Strawberry Media Arts booth
"In addition to the broadcast at the NHK-MT booth in the International Conference Center, we also conducted a bidirectional video broadcast on the 4K LCD monitor at the booth of Strawberry Media Arts, a large-scale video manufacturer. This was transmitted via 4K uncompressed IP transmission, not 8K. We hope to use this high image quality uncompressed IP transmission at various sites for future development," stated Shigeru Yoshida, Director of Broadcast Video Business at PFU.
"We used our company's QG70 transmission device for real-time, uncompressed IP transmission of 8K video, which approaches the realism of the real world. The three-day demonstration went pretty flawlessly, proving that uncompressed 8K IP transmission has become a reality," stated Atsushi Tanaka, Director of Broadcast Business.
Mr. Yoshida said, "By implementing QG70s, it would become possible, for example, to have real-time IP transmission of ultra-high-definition video between sites, such as broadcast station branches or post-production locations for various broadcasters. This would enable video transmission from remote studios or from the field, as well as footage previewing. In addition, we can also deliver powerful live footage in real time regardless of the field, such as at event venues or medical institutions. At the Inter BEE demonstration, we transmitted 8K and 4K video, but of course this equipment is perfectly capable of handling regular HD broadcast as well."
